Below is my interview with Stephen Grootes on why I am skeptical about the unbundling process.

The ERA bill has passed the SA parliament; I didn't expect it not to.

Despite my objections, I would like for it to succeed, but as I wrote previously, I think South Africa is underestimating how difficult of a challenge this will be. Power-sector restructuring is a mixed picture across the world, there is no clear “best” or worst system.

What SA requires to make unbundeling work is above all political commitment to want to make it work. This includes a political class that accepts bankruptcies as normal and we who will have backbone to stick with the policy as market corrections take place.

Only time will tell if we do have that prerequisite.
