South African nuclear power plant wins approval for 20-year life extension
Good new from Koeberg
Koeberg’s Unit 1 just received approval for its 20-year life extension.
Work will now commence on Unit 2. South Africa is making a wise decision by first extending the life of the existing reactor and then using that experience as a springboard for potential new builds. This is the right approach: first fix the existing system, then proceed to build new reactors. This is the approach that the French, USA and Canadians followed.
Good engineers who are trained on older plants end up being the best designers.
Congratulations to the team back home for the excellent job.
