Support for Life Extension of Koeberg Power Station
Support the NNR Regulator - Before February 2024!
The public hearings for the life extension of South Africa’s Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is underway. I encourage my audience to write letters to the National Nuclear Regulator in support of the life extension.
The project was intricate, requiring a high level of skill in its execution. The consequences are significant, as any obstruction by South Africa’s anti-nuclear activists could result in South Africa being deprived of low-cost and affordable energy.
Submissions to the regulator can be sent to the following email before 1 February: koebergLTO@nnr.co.za
For those residing near Tableview and Atlantis, in-person comments for the upcoming years are also welcome. Please refer to the NRR's website for the latest updates on the situation. The deadline for email submissions is the 1st of February 2024.
Below is my letter in support of the Koeberg Life Extension Project.
Subject: Support for Life Extension of Koeberg Power Station
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my strong support for the life extension of Koeberg Power Station. I believe that the current regulatory safety standards are overly conservative, and I would like to highlight the safety and benefits associated with nuclear power as well as small dose radiation in particular.
The concerns raised by organizations, particularly those associated with anti-nuclear activists in South Africa, appear to be largely unfounded and not rooted in objective epidemiological data or the most robust scientific measurements available. It is crucial to highlight that these activists may be exploiting the public participation process, and many are financially supported by entities with vested interests in alternative technologies, such as the German Government's Henrich Böll Stiftung who funded the “safety study” that was used by SAIFCE - the radical religious movement that almost always opposes Nuclear Power. Therefore, it is essential to scrutinize their contributions in light of their potential conflicts of interest.
In particular, I urge the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) to conduct laboratory tests on radiation hormesis to better inform the public about the potential benefits of controlled exposure to radiation. It is my belief that a more nuanced understanding of radiation safety will help dispel irrational fears surrounding nuclear power.
As part of my submission, I am including an article on radiation safety that I believe provides valuable insights into the subject. You can access the article through the following link:

Thank you for considering my perspective on this matter that is informed by the best available scientific opinion. I hope that a thorough examination of radiation hormesis and a reevaluation of safety standards will contribute to the informed decision-making process regarding the life extension of Koeberg Power Station.
Yours Sincerely,
Hügo Krüger
